Justice: Merriam-Webster's 2018 Word of the Year

A couple of weeks ago on one of my many daily visits to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, this article on the top word lookups in 2018 caught my attention as did the accompanying image of Themis. Merriam-Webster’s word of the year for 2018 is justice with the entry being consulted 74% more than in 2017.

As a proofreader working with court reporters, my business Themis Proofreading was inspired by Themis, the Titan Goddess of Divine Law and Order and of prophecy and oaths (and advisor to Zeus). In earlier depictions of Themis, she does not have a blindfold because as an oracle and able to foretell the future, wearing a blindfold would be pointless. She also didn't have a sword because she represented common consent, not coercion. The Roman Goddess of Justice, Justitia, was portrayed with scales, a sword, and a blindfold symbolizing impartiality before the law.
